Description
Once upon a time near the rim of a knoll, just west of the hollow where the polygnomes roll, there lived an old troll who collected a toll from the travelers on the Great Road.
He crouched near a gate while lying in wait where he slept, then he crept from un-under the beam o'er a treacherous seam of the Stygian stream, waylaying the unwary soul.
And while many had strived, many more would soon die as they tried to cross that old bridge, for the troll had not one but two sets of teeth, and he likened to eat all the tasty young treats taking flight to the top of the ridge.
Came a day, his fateful reckon, when Herr Goethegrupf he did beckon for the troll to come hither where togither they would dither all aquiver and lock horns for the right to cross that old bridge.
But the smarter of the pair - the one whose name was not Norbert (nor- BEAR) - told the goat to float his boat and head downstream.
To this call the gruff came 'round, like a terror come unbound as the gnashing of his teeth and the thrashing underneath filled the heath with a horror seldom found.
'Twas the eldest one of three of the Billy goats, you see, who taught his brothers: To be wise, should an obstacle arise along the path of one's discretion, like a peckish troll's intention, let the victor claim the spoils from those petulant gargoyles who guard the ridge, but lost the bridge, to a most unlikely midge . . . whom some call gruff.
